   First thing is to check out the legality of owning the pond. Is it with in the size limits of your city or town code, does it need to be fenced in, are there any underground cables or pipes? After you check this out you need to find out how large you can dig the pond, always try to make one larger than you think that you will need because eventually you will need the extra room n the pond. How deep depends on how deep the frost gets in your area, you want it deeper than the frost goes so that the fish do not freeze solid in the pond .t

   1. Koi fish ponds need to be at least 6 feet deep at their deepest end with proper slopes and shelves

   2. Pick an area for the pond close to your house but away from any forested areas and trees

   3. Choose pond plants with care. Some plants are actually toxic for koi fish

   4. Choose a good bio-mechanical filtration system given the size of your pond and the potential growth of the koi fish

   5. Koi are cold-blooded but warm water fish. Studies have shown that koi grow optimally at 27 degrees C
