What fish are ideal for backyard pond in South Cali (zone 9) ?
I have gotten a 270 gallon preform pond and a ~500 gallon EPDM pond in the backyard. Im not going to use filters, but just water plants.
Would you suggest me some interesting, hardy fish (other than KOI or gold fish),that dont mess up the water and dont require much time to be cared.
Thanks for your time and have a good day :)

I don't have one, but I've heard that redtail catfish are great. They're usually found small, about two inches, unless someone brought one in that they couldn't keep. These guys are used to Amazon waters, but are very tolerable and can grow to around 2 feet. They can also be fed by hand which is cool. Freshwater aquariums at larger aquariums or zoos have them often.

Almost anything. Without a filter though, I’d avoid more sensitive stuff. I’ve heard of people keeping African Cichlids outdoors and the colors become unbelievable. And Cichlids are pretty tough too. If you can drain some of the water every couple of weeks, that should keep them going quite well. And adding plants will help too, even though the Africans will nibble at them.
